Cutting Costs, Saving LivesCongratulations to EIH alum and now EIH teaching assistant, Shawn Swanson and his startup, MedsForAll, for being featured on the UW homepage. MedsForAll started in EIH in 2016 to tackle the rising cost of epinephrine pens with an affordable and novel auto-injector, which can also be used to deliver other medications available in a glass ampule.

Instilling grit in tomorrow’s inventor-entrepreneurs: q&a with Soyoung KangThis month’s VentureWell faculty spotlight is Soyoung Kang, Executive Director of the Engineering Innovation in Health (EIH) program at University of Washington-Seattle Campus. Kang is an active member of the VentureWell community. She’s served as a Principal Investigator for teams participating in the E-Team Grant Program. She received a Faculty Grant for a new initiative within the existing EIH program that will create commercialization teams to solve pressing health challenges.

DopCuff Makes Jones+Foster AcceleratorCongratulations to DopCuff for being accepted into the 2019-2020 cohort of the Jones + Foster Accelerator at UW's Foster School's Buerk Center for Entrepreneurship. As a Jones + Foster Accelerator company, DopCuff will receive mentorship and coaching by entrepreneurs and investors across the region, and will be eligible to earn up to $25,000 in follow-on funding.

Congratulations to EIH teams at 2019 Health Innovation ChallengeEngineering Innovation in Health teams competed again this year in the 2019 Hollomon Health Innovation Challenge, hosted by the UW Foster School’s Buerk Center for Entrepreneurship. Winning the "Judges Also Really Liked" (JARL) award and $5,000 was the team that developed DopCuff, a blood pressure monitor for end-stage patients implanted with Left Ventricle Assist Device (LVAD). Other participating teams affiliated with EIH were CathAlign (relieves nurse time/labor by automating transducers critical to treatment decisions made in Critical Care) and RoboBeat (high-fidelity sound generation in medical training manikins). EIH awarded VentureWell Faculty Grant to support collaboration with Foster School of BusinessVentureWell supports the creation of an emerging generation of science and technology inventors and the innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystems that are critical to their success. The EIH program was recently awarded a Faculty Grant from VentureWell to build cross-campus collaboration by integrating entrepreneurship students into EIH teams to explore commercialization potential of technical solutions to pressing health challenges. UW Engineering Innovation in Health program recognized nationally as winner of the Great Team Science contestThe Great CTSA Team Science Contest was established to better understand the various ways in which Team Science exists at research institutes across the nation. Over 170 initiatives were submitted to the contest and judged based on importance, innovation, and impact. The highest score was awarded to Dr. Posner for his work in establishing and running the Engineering Innovation in Health program. Congratulations to all for this national recognition!

EIH Teaching Team wins multiple 2018 College of Engineering AwardsCongratulations to the Engineering Innovation in Health (EIH) team for being selected for multiple 2018 College of Engineering awards. The College of Engineering awards acknowledge the extraordinary efforts of the college's teaching and research assistants, staff, and faculty members. The Team Award was given to the EIH teaching team for driving engineering innovations in healthcare to lower costs and improve the quality of care. The Student Award for Teaching was given to Soyoung Kang for being a highly motivated teacher whose passion for engineering has transformed the classroom experience.

Students wow judges at Hollomon Health Innovation ChallengeEngineering Innovation in Health teams competed again this year in the 2018 Hollomon Health Innovation Challenge, hosted by the UW Foster School’s Buerk Center for Entrepreneurship. Winning third place and $5,000 was the team that developed ACBI, a device that makes continuous bladder irrigation treatment faster, less expensive, and safer. Other participating teams affiliated with EIH were Bite Block (an aid for oral invasive operations), EsoCool (prevents thermal injury during atrial fibrillation treatment), and FlushCut (aids in the cutting of the fibula bone during reconstructive surgery).

Former EIH student recognized as part of the Husky 100Congratulations to Jessica Zistatsis on being selected as one of the Husky 100! As a senior in mechanical engineering, Jessica was involved in the 2016 EIH project PlayGait, a pediatric exoskeleton for children with cerebral palsy. Jessica is now a master’s student in mechanical engineering and is continuing her work to bridge engineering and healthcare as a member of the Steele Lab. Her project PlayGait has seen continued success as both a recipient of a Target Challenge grant and a CoMotion Innovation Fund grant.
